A bit more then a month ago we released Project Penelope 1.3. The goal of Project Penelope always has been to get as close to the original game as possible. Penelope 1.3 introduced a form of capital cities and gears. All this based emulation (simulation of original gameplay), but not actually using Age of Empires Online game features. With Project Celeste evolving more quickly then anticipated, the community members who worked on Project Penelope feel a new version of their project became obsolete for now.

We are proud to announce the release of Project Penelope version 1.3! A few community member worked together the past few weeks and took Project Penelope to another level. Most noticeable change is the ability to equip gear.

What is Project Penelope

Project Penelope is the offline version of Age of Empires Online. The project was founded by a community member who released a version of Age of Empires Online from it's beta days which had a scenario editor built in. This editor allowed you to place units, make maps, and gave you a way to play the Age of Empires Online. At this point Project Penelope supports the final version of Age of Empires Online and some of it's features. All six civilizations can be played with the right technologies, units can be equiped with gear and even some original quests can be played. All this still in offline mode only.

What's new in version 1.3

Project Penelope is mainly a release which takes emulation (simulation of original gameplay) to a next level. The following has been added:

  • Capital city
    New in Project Penelope 1.3 is a basic form of capital city. From here you can press the region map button and select a quest to play. Also this makes it possible to have slots to save your items. In addition to the original announcement of Project Penelope version 1.3 we also added the option to construct buildings and save the design.

  • Gear
    Project Penelope 1.3 allows you to equip gear! From the capital city you can equip gear to units. That gear will have effect in your quests. Not only for statistics but also their visual style! Also it is possible to equip gear to enemy units, to bring their behavior more close to the original. We included some groupings for quest designers based on the original character files (they define AI behavior). For your own units also the icons are included. For enemy units, you will only see changed statistics.

  • Designer tools
    For quest designers (and ultimately for players) we added some designer tools. For example now quest objectives are close to the original and can quests have a countdown timer. Many more new quest features can be found. We advise you to take a look at the scenario pack done by Musictopia .

We are proud to announce the next version of Project Penelope. It will be released to members of our community on [b]April 29th[/b]. [b]Something to consider[/b] In 2015 we started this community AOEO4EVER.net next to the [url=https://steamcommunity.com/groups/bringbackAOEO]steam group BBAOEO[/url]. This group is a petition in order to persuade Microsoft to return Age of Empires Online through Steam. Ultimate goal of AOEO4EVER.net would also be to achieve this but we also offer a central gathering of other projects that contribute in the return of Age of Empires Online. For moreover a year community members can enjoy Project Penelope, the offline version of Age of Empires Online. Originally Project Penelope was based on an older version of Age of Empires Online and released by [url=https://aoeo4ever.net/community/109-agent-luciano/profile.html]agent_luciano[/url]. Some community members picked this version up and worked towards a Project Penelope 1.2 release. This version was based on the final game version of Age of Empires Online. Most work on this project has been done by [url=https://aoeo4ever.net/community/502-aizamk/profile.html]Aizamk[/url] and [url=https://aoeo4ever.net/community/105-kisonik/profile.html]Kisonik[/url]. Everything based on game emulation. Which in this case best translates to simulation of the original game but not using the full functions of the game. So limitations are still there. Now following the release of Project Penelope 1.3 to add new emulations. You can find the list of features below. But next to this project there is also work ongoing on a promising other project which doesn't use emulation, but attempts to recreate server responses. There still is a long road but the results the last two months are really hopefull. Compared to several other initiatives like 'Neoages' this seems our best chance so far. We are proud to announce the release of Project Penelope version 1.2! A few community member worked together the past few weeks and took Project Penelope to another level. Most noticeable change is releasing Project Penelope based on the final version of Age of Empires Online. Also we feel we made Project Penelope more user friendly; Easy installation, multi language support, file browser to start quests and much more! We haven't even figured out all of the possibilities that using this final version of Age of Empires Online might offer. So don't expect this release to be the last of Project Penelope untill another project finishes with a true online version. [b][size=5]What is Project Penelope[/size][/b] Project Penelope is the offline version of Age of Empires Online. Goldmines didn't work, Woadraider couldn't do his powerfull charge attack and so on. Project Penelope 1.2 corrects these kinds of issues. Now your Babylonian Lancers will attack with real power! [/li] [li][u]User friendly[/u] No need to find your way through the editor anymore! We have added a simple file browser for you to just select the scenario you want to play! Just click and play! Also we have enabled multi language support which was highly requested by our French community. A tutorial on how to set this up already has been posted. Now, if the scenario designer has set it up, you can use advisors and also notice your actuall civilization shield and custom city level. Recently we posted a gameplay demo of Project Penelope version 1.2. We are proud to announce this next version of this Age of Empires Online project will be released to members of our community a week from now. This gameplay was enhanced in the final version of Age of Empires Online and now units keep positions better [/li] [li] [b]Celtic gameplay:[/b] In Project Penelope version 1.1 some gameplay features of civilizations where missing, like for example charge attack on Woadraiders and babylonian Lancer. Although we can't confirm a releasedate yet, today we can show you some actual gameplay. Take a look at the video below where we play 'Ode to a Hero' in Project Penelope version 1.2 with Celtic civilization to show some features. Notice the more easy way to load quests (non-editor) and loading screens for example on the gameplay demo. We are proud to announce the release of Project Penelope version 1.1! A few community member worked together the past few week and added some exciting modifications to the original Project Penelope. Most notable change is the adding of the four other civilizations that were available in the final version of Age of Empires Online! [b][size=5]What is Project Penelope[/size][/b] There was a version of the Age of Empires Online from long before release that had a scenario editor built in. This part of the code wasn't intended to be accessed and was locked away in more recent versions. This editor allowed you to place units, make a map, and click "playtest" which gave you a way to play the Age of Empires Online. Project Penelope is the return of this game version and only allows you to access this editor. [b][size=5]What's new in Project Penelope version 1.1[/size][/b] The following features have been added to Project Penelope within this release: [ul] [li][u]Six civilizations[/u] The final version of Age of Empires Online contained six civilizations like The Norse, Celts and Persians. We've added those civilizations to Project Penelope version 1.1 and they are intented to work just like the original. Now you can play with the mighty Norse and the fearsom Celts! We already have added some scenarios for the different civilizations to our [url=http://aoeo4ever.net/downloads/category/9-scenario-s.html]download section[/url] so you can give them a go! [/li] [li][u]Skirmish difficulty[/u] When you 'PlayTest' a scenario in the original Project Penelope you can select a difficulty setting. This didn't effect gameplay untill now. In Penelope version 1.1 you can use the original difficulty levels (weak, strong, unstoppable) for skirmish scenarios! For non-skirmish quests this setting is ignored. [/li] [li][u]Vanity / Visual style[/u] When gear was added to units or villagers their style changed in Age of Empires Online. We've restored this feature in Project Penelope version 1.1 and added demo styles to specific units. Lunch knights all over again! Soon we will release a tutorial on how you can set your custom style for units or villagers and share them within our community. Adding the technologies of the others civilizations resulted in a remap of the technologies.
